CABLE AND WIRELESS JAMAICA NOW CALLED LIMEFollowing a name change on February 5, 1998 Cable & Wireless Limited replaced Telecommunications of Jamaica Limited as the sole provider of the island's domestic and international telephone services. (TOJ was incorporated in May 1987 as the holding company for the Jamaica Telephone Company and Jamaica International Telecommunications Limited).Cable & Wireless is the island's leading provider of national and international fixed line services. Cable & Wireless remains the island’s only full service provider, guaranteeing business and residential customers reliable, tailored solutions in mobile and fixed voice, data, IP (Internet Protocol) and broadband services, as well as services to other telecoms providers. Cable & Wireless is owned 82% by Cable & Wireless plc with the other18% being owned by members of the public. Cable & Wireless also owns Jamaica Digiport International Limited, a company which provides high speed data and other telecommunications services exclusively to free zone and offshore companies Cable & Wireless has had an enviable record of outstanding corporate citizenship making major financial contributions to education, health, sports and inner-city development. Major beneficiaries have been the University Hospital of the West Indies; the Sickle Cell Unit; the University of the West Indies (UWI); the University of Technology (UTech); The National Foundation for Science and Technology and the Multi-Care Foundation, a private sector-funded organization established to improve social conditions and provide self-improvement opportunities for inner-city youth. Cable & Wireless is also the major sponsor of the national High Schools Lawn Tennis competition; the island's Junior Badminton program; the Senior National Netball Team; the island's Special Olympics programmed; and have adopted three primary schools in rural Jamaica. In addition, Cable & Wireless makes hundreds of small donations to a plethora of other organizations. In recent times Cable & Wireless established the Cable & Wireless Foundation to be the central vehicle for coordinating its support for programs benefiting Education, and in particular e-education, and Sports. His Policy states the measures Cable & Wireless (herein after referred to as the “Company”) shall undertake to ensure that its telecommunication activities, products and services are environmentally safe to its customers, employees, and other stakeholders. To achieve this goal Cable & Wireless shall develop and implement an Environmental Management System that complies with ISO 14001 requirements. Cable & Wireless shall comply with all relevant Jamaican Legislation and International Agreements, and shall integrate environmental management into all business processes. It shall continually improve its environmental performance and prevent pollution as far as is reasonably practicable. In fulfilling its responsibility Cable & Wireless shall: Perform periodic reviews of Company facilities to ensure compliance with established C&WJ environmental policies, procedures, corporate requirements, government guidelines, applicable laws and regulations and other requirements, support and assist Cable & Wireless Group Environment Strategy Team in the development of future policies and standards, identify and evaluate all operational undertakings which affect the environment, and control and manage those effects that are significant, promote environmental awareness among all employees and ensure that all personnel whose work may create a significant impact on the environment receive appropriate training, review annually its environmental performance and implement corrective action where necessary, develop and maintain formal emergency and spill response programs and report releases to the applicable governmental agencies as well as Cable & Wireless ’s appropriate personnel, monitor service providers to ensure conformance with our environmental requirements, ensure that plant is planned, installed and maintained with full regard to its potential environmental impact, reduce emissions of harmful substances to the atmosphere, ensure so far as is reasonably practicable, that resources are not wasted and that materials are reused and/or recycled, reduce, so far as is reasonably practicable, and dispose of all remaining wastes in an environmentally responsible manner, minimize the potential contamination of water supplies and require suppliers of materials and services to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. In 2008 Cable and Wireless morphed into what is known as LIME. They currently give a new and fresh approach to communications across all Caribbean countries. They promote principles and deliver on a promise to use international credentials using technologies in the Caribbean basin region and create products and services that improve people’s lives with the best service and communication solutions ranging from landline to mobile services to internet broad band to Cable TV and general entertainment.
