UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (UTECH)-
The original name of UTech Kingston Jamaica was the Jamaica
Institute of Technology; and when they opened in 1938 just
over 50 students were enrolled and only four programs were
offered. In 1959 the name was changed to the College of Arts,
Science and Technology (CAST) Kingston Jamaica. By 1964
UTech’s Kingston Jamaica incorporation into the CAST scheme
was validated by an Act of Parliament. Much later in 1986 the
CAST Scheme was revised to make UTech Kingston Jamaica a
degree-granting institution; the University was also empowered
to conduct affairs under two Statutory Bodies, Governing
Council & Academic Board. In 1995 UTech Kingston Jamaica as
formally accorded University status and by 1999 UTech’s
Kingston Jamaica student population rose to over 6,000.
Offering over 100 programs at Certificate, Diploma & Degree
levels, academic offerings & development modeled on English
Polytechnic, emphasis on flexibility of approach, work-based
learning, professional linkages and several programs
franchised through links with Community Colleges. Most
programs linked to national and international professional
organizations.
UTech Kingston Jamaica mission is achieved through the
fulfillment of the following goals, To pursue excellence
through the Institution's programs and the work of faculty,
non-academic staff and students; to respond to national and
regional human-resource needs; to maintain and enhance the
role of technical/vocational education; to provide flexible
delivery systems that are able to serve students who follow
non-traditional routes to higher education; to ensure gender
equity; to provide support to students by offering
scholarships and providing a system of organized financial
aid; to establish and pursue partnerships and collaborative
arrangements with individual supporters, professional
associations, educational institutions, governments and
corporate entities at regional, national and international
levels; to provide opportunities for communication and
information transfer with other institutions of higher
learning and to foster and encourage applied product-oriented
research as an integral part of staff responsibility.
