UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES -
The
University began at Mona, Kingston Jamaica, in 1948 as a
College of the University of London. It achieved full
university status in 1962. The Imperial College of Tropical
Agriculture in
Trinidad was converted into the St. Augustine Campus in
1961 and in 1963; a third campus was established at Cave Hill
in Barbados. There is also a Centre for Hotel and Tourism
Management in the Bahamas. Kingston Jamaica University Centers
in the non-campus countries ensure that a wide cross section
of the population has access to a variety of educational
resources and services and there is also an innovative
distance education facility. The UWI Kingston Jamaica is the
region’s premier educational institution. Its faculties offer
a wide range of undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs
in Humanities and Education, Pure and Applied Sciences,
Science and Agriculture, Engineering, Law, Medical Sciences
and Social Sciences. There is a strong emphasis on Jamaican
issues making the UWI Kingston Jamaica the ideal educational
institution for local and international students with an
interest in Jamaican society. UWI Kingston Jamaica's mission
is to unlock West Indian potential for economic and cultural
growth by high quality teaching and research aimed at meeting
critical regional needs, by providing West Indian society with
an active intellectual centre and by linking the West Indian
community with distinguished centers of research and teaching
in Jamaica and overseas. UWI Kingston Jamaica recognizes that
as a regional university supported by the West Indian peoples,
and as the sole local organ equipped to meet local
requirements and to relate its own developmental programs to
them, it should give priority to regional needs. There are
several other Universities in Kingston Jamaica, such as the
Manchester Business School, The University of Technology
previously known as CAST, the University of Phoenix.
